The RV roof repair process will involve the use of a liquid rubber substance in most cases. It is a commonly used product with a 26 year history of success in the RV industry. The product can be applied to various substrates most without the need for a primer. Part of what makes liquid rubber so effective is that it is catalyst based and the curing process forces any trapped air out and onto the surface. This leaves you with an airtight seal unlike other products that trap air between the substrate and the coating making is highly vulnerable to cracking. The inside mechanism of liquid rubber is made possible through the free radicals inside the rubber linking up with each other. This can be done as the liquid rubber is in a consistent temperature between 55 to 110 degrees Fahrenheit. This is similar to roof temperature but it will not create more of a stress on the surface than necessary if used right. The free radicals in the rubber will cause the rubber bonds to link up with each other, thus creating a sturdy surface that is easy to add and use. The oxygen exposure to the rubber will cause these bonds to become a little stronger and to solidify. The peroxide that is typically found in this rubber will decompose after a while. The exposure to oxygen at this point will encourage the peroxide to wear out and stop working after a while. Once catalyst is mixed into the liquid rubber you have approximately four hours of pot life before it starts its initial seet up. Change in temperatures or rain will not affect the curing process but it will show it down. For example the material waterproofs as soon as it’s applied that means it can rain directly on the wet film but it will not continue curing until the water has evaporated. With temp changes EPDM liquid rubber roofing will not cure below 55 F but once temperatures resume above 55 the product will again start curing. The ability of this process to start/stop and continue has been a huge benefit for customers. We do recommend however scheduling your work when you expect daytime temperatures to be above 55 degree.
