There is the question of a not so good starting point. The first order is to see that this particular starting point is not that good. Using the simple of example of someone trying to meet someone new and getting to know a person for a date. If the person is revealing, that they aren't really attracted or interested in what you have to say, that is not a good starting point or platform to launch and yet a lot of people might go to situations where they want to disprove the other person's theory about them given their own intial outtake as to this person's good desirability. Given an open system however where there are a lot of people out there you can meet, why would you want to exert maybe wasted energy and focus on this situation where it might be better to use your resources of time, energy and focus on those who have an initial display of interest in you that you can further investigate better due to this initial level of interest which more so is a representation of an open door rather than a closed door. There are other situations with a poor starting point where you could play catchup, so as with learning something in a given time frame, socializing more within the week, month or year and where it fact might be desirable to catch up and go with a goal that can be realized without tripping all over yourself and the situation at hand. I might have a great end of the summer vacation, even though the bulk of my summer was packed with work, I can comeback from not the greatest starting position for an adventurous summer to the endpoint of a good summer adventure wise. But there will always be room for debate If my starting point at a ten mile race is 2 miles behind everybody else and I'm playing catch up from the get go as miles behind, I might attempt this, or I might say, I'll skip the race altogether. There might be the good reasonable argument for the turn back and forget it, as forging ahead from a not so good starting point, might not be worth it. Whether it is going to be desirable, enjoyable or worthwhile to overcome a bad starting point, is going to be an open question especially against the backdrop of other doable options that might afford a much better launch pad right from the get go and a better platform can sometimes be indicative of a better future in undertaking this particular course or endeavour.
