How to Effectively Do Carpet Cleaning When Having Chewing Gum Stains

Home Improvement,Fashion & Cosmetics,Family & Parenting
If chewing gum gets on your carpet, dry cleaning fluid from a dry cleaners is the most effective option, or dab with Eucalyptus Oil for minor amounts

Cleaning chewing gum that has been pressed into your precious carpet might seem like a nightmare, but in truth, it is a very simple process. All you need for this very easy task is a cube of ice, a knife or pair of scissors, and a vacuum cleaner.

Take a single ice cube out of an ice tray, and slowly mash on it over the chewing gum. This will harden the chewing gum, making it easier to take care of it later. Once the chewing gum is hard enough to handle, use a small knife to carefully cut it away.

If the chewing gum is pressed so deep into the carpet that it has become awkward to cut away neatly with a knife, try using scissors instead. Vacuum clean the area to pick up any tiny fragments of chewing gum. So, remember, massage an ice cube over the chewing gum.

Then, cut or pick it out with knife and scissors. Always be careful when handling sharp objects to avoid causing injury. Vacuum clean the area to pick up any tiny fragments of chewing gum.

Hair Dryer Method

The exact opposite of the ice method, this method heats the gum to make it pliable so it can be scraped away. Use the hair dryer to heat the gum. Be careful not to overheat the area or it may burn the carpet fibers. Once the gum is softened, gently pull it out of the carpet fibers. It may help to cover your hand with a plastic bag or rubber glove so you can use your fingers to work the gum out of the carpet. Remove as much as possible, then move onto the next carpet cleaning method to remove the remaining residue.

Removal of Remaining Residue

Once you've removed a large portion of the gum, you are ready to tackle the residue left behind. This should be minimal. Apply one of the above items to the remaining gum. Each of these have a lubricating quality that will help release the gum from the carpet fibers. Apply the chosen product to the remaining gum. Work it in gently with your fingers. Blot or pull gently on the fibers with the soft cloth to remove the gum. It may also be helpful to scrape at it with your fingernails. Once the gum is removed, you will need to clean the area to remove the residue from the cleaning product. Mix a small amount of soap or dish detergent with warm water. Blot the area with a soft cloth that has been moistened with the mixture. Continue blotting until the area is clean. Rinse by blotting with a clean cloth. Press on the area with a dry cloth to remove any excess water. Allow the area to dry completely.
