Are you a copycat drummer or are you developing your own style of drumming? Do you spend hours perfecting another drummer’s groove to his song, or do you play the song the way you feel it from within? Are you frustrating yourself developing double kicks, grooves and fills that you know that just aren’t you? |
Sure, these things can be impressive, but who’s being impressed. It’s doubtful that the one copied will be impressed. He probably doesn’t know you exist. Are you trying to impress yourself for some reason?
Answer these questions truthfully and you will never be a frustrated drummer. Even the scriptures state that it is not wise to compare yourselves among yourselves. This only has two results, pride or frustration.
Humility is the only road in life that leads up. Humility is accepting the gift within you and acknowledging its source. James 1:17 states, “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning”. God has given every person a gift, which is good and can be perfected. He is no respecter of persons, nor will He change His mind.
To be inspired by and learn from others is one thing, but to copy or envy them is entirely another. The world already has Dave Weckl and Carter Beauford. What the world needs now is you. The gift in you is what the world needs to experience today.
Think about how much inspiration you are missing, if you are drawing off someone else. Drawing from the gift within you is the only way to reach your perfected potential. Proverbs 18:16 states, “A man’s gift maketh room for him, and bringeth him before great men”.
The famous drummers of today and the past all started at the same place, having to recognize their gift within, and throughout life with patience perfect it. James 1:4 says, “But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing”.
God has given you your gift to be used for good and expects you to allow Him to perfect it. He has a new sound for the earth and He will bring it through you. So, never be a copycat drummer, because the sound you imitate is already here. Every song bird has its own song, except one, the Mocking Bird. The Mocking Bird is known for its ability to mock sounds, even the sound of a cat or a rusty gate. The Mocking Bird has no unique sound. The single most important thing that makes great drummers is not speed or ability, but uniqueness. The only source of uniqueness comes from within. Vintage Jammer
