Gasoline on carpet is a fairly serious matter so no jokes on this one. If an enormous amount has been spilled on the carpet, you may need to have it replaced as it has saturated the padding. The solution is to rinse the nonvolatile solvent(gasoline) out of the carpet using a volatile solvent (dry cleaning solvent). Volatility refers to the ability of the solvent to dissipate at room temperature. First blot up the spill using paper towels. Continue until you've removed as much of the gasoline as possible. Be absolutely certain to dispose of the paper towels in a safe manner as they are highly flammable. Now take a generous amount of baking soda or kitty litter and pile it upon the spill. Let it remain there for at least a couple hours. It will absorb more of the gasoline as well as reduce the odor. It may be wise to leave it there overnight. The final step is to mix the detergent solution listed above. Apply it to the gasoline stain with a gentle blotting motion. Remove it by patting with paper towels. You do not want to rub at the stain as it will simply spread the gas as well as damage your carpet. Just blot the solution on using a sponge, and then blot it off with paper towels. Continue until you can no longer smell gasoline. Be sure to dispose of the paper towels in a safe manner as they will be flammable. Dispose of the sponge as well as it will have been contaminated with gasoline.
