Now that you have graduated from college and spent a few months searching for employment, you may be starting to become discouraged. Once the feeling of discouragement starts to set in, it can be very easy to give up. What you need to realize is that things aren't as easy as they were before. Now that you have acquired skills and education in a specific field, there is a lot more competition out there. Does that mean you should just settle for any type of employment that comes your way? The answer to that question depends on your current financial situation. No matter what you decide, stay hopeful and keep applying because there are more than enough programming jobs out there. There may be several reasons why you may not be getting the amount of interviews and offers that you feel you should get. Now is the time where you can't afford to get comfortable and assume that eventually you will get lucky. Even though much of your success will depend on the amount of applications you are putting in, you also need to take a few other things into consideration. Take a look at your resume. You need to make sure that it makes you stand out in the most positive manner. It needs to accurately reflect your skills and personality. You can't just put down your employment history in a word document along with some dates and expect for a potential employer to be impressed. If you can afford to do so, have your resume looked over and critiqued by a professional resume service. If there are any issues with the way it is put together, they can help provide you with a more professional and effective one. Programming jobs are expected to increase over the next decade. That means there will be a ton of potential employers and positions for you to apply for. You shouldn't wait until all of those opportunities are posted on some job site. A lot of really good programming jobs are not posted to the public when they first become available. That means if you want to gain the edge and a good jump on getting a particular position, you need to start networking in the field. You don't have to know the CEO and president of a company in order to get a chance; you just need to know someone. But you aren't going to meet these people while you are sitting at home on your computer. Start dressing the part and going to events where professionals in the industry go. In addition to going to job fairs, don't forget to go to meetings and public forums. The bottom line is you never know whom the person is that is going to give you a chance to work for their company. That is why you need to do everything possible to make your application and resume stand out more.
