Getting a Degree All teachers are required to have a bachelor’s degree of some sort. What the degree is in will vary slightly depending on what you want to teach. If you are looking to teach at the elementary school level, you are likely going to want to major in education. Because you aren’t going to be only teaching a specific subject, you need to be well rounded and know more about the art of teaching than any particular subject. Nearly all colleges and universities offer degree programs in education. There are also plenty of online schooling options as well if you are looking to save money and avoid the typical college experience. If your goal is teaching at the secondary level, your education will have to be more specialized. It is recommended that you major in the field you wish to teach (science, english, etc) and get a minor in education. Some schools also will have an option to major in secondary education specifically, which isn’t a bad option either. If you do choose that, you may want to get a minor or double major in the field you want to teach in. Read this if you want more information on the subject of becoming a teacher. Getting a Certificate While the degree part of the equation is similar regardless of your goals and location, getting your path to a teaching certificate could be very different from someone in a different school, different state, or different career aspirations. If you are going the traditional route and getting a degree in education from a university, it is likely that you will simultaneously earn your teaching certificate as a part of the program you go through. You’ll probably take an exam (PRAXIS is the most common) that will prove you have what it takes, and then will receive your certification with your degree. Discuss this with the school you are thinking about attending to make sure this is the case. For those going through a non traditional route, things can be a little bit different. You might already have a degree in something unrelated to education and just need to get a certification. If this is the case, there are many different programs in all states that you can earn a certification from. My mom went through one of these programs, and while it wasn’t easy, it is much quicker than attempting to get a second degree in education. Search the name of your site on our search page, or just do a Google search, and you should be able to find different program options very quickly. Student Teaching The last part of your required steps to becoming a teacher is student teaching. This will also normally be done while you are working on your degree. A student teaching position is essentially an unpaid internship in which you work with an established teacher in your chosen field. In doing so you not only fulfill a basic requirement for your career, but also gain valuable knowledge and experience in a hands on way. The school you are attending likely has a program already set up that will match you with a school and teacher, so doing this will require little planning on your part.
