Nick was not only an accomplished drummer, playing in three schoolbands and a church band, but he had an intellectual curiosity andability to connect with people beyond his years, according to hisfamily and friends. St. Francis parent Amy Wilhelm, whose daughter Rachel is in theband program, said Nick's death has left a crater in the tight-knitband family. News of Nick's death has not only affected currentstudents but also graduates who were seniors when Nick was afreshman two years ago, she said. "For a freshman to have such an impact on kids three years older,he was that kind of student," Wilhelm said. "He was just a greatkid. It's a huge loss. The grief is overwhelming." Charlie McMillan, 18, who just graduated from St. Francis, spentthe past two years playing with Nick in all three school bands --marching, jazz and symphonic. "He was so passionate about what he did," McMillan said. "That'sone thing I'm going to miss and the band is going to miss." Nick's parents didn't want to talk about the killing or the uncle,saying only that "we knew he had issues." Neighbor Richard Powell told the Portland Oregonian that he and SueWallace, a retired clinical social worker, used to walk their dogstogether. He met Adrien Wallace only once. "Basically, she said he was kind of unfriendly. He didn't talk alot," Powell said. "She used to say he just can't relate well topeople." Oregon authorities have not released any motive for the killing.Wallace had no previous criminal record. Nick was visiting his grandmother as part of his summer vacation.He toured the University of Washington with her last week andwatched a performance by the university's percussion ensemble. Tammy Juarez graduated from Stanford and Martin Juarez earned adegree from UC Berkeley. Both were looking forward to their sonmaking his own college choice. "He talked about maybe being ateacher, being some kind of scientist," Martin Juarez said. "Wewanted him to do the best he could and find his own path." Nick was fascinated with genealogy and was particularly interestedin politics and history. His mother traces her family back to theAmerican Revolution. His paternal great-grandfather was a laborleader in Mexico who posed for pictures with three Mexicanpresidents. "He was known as the kid who always wanted to do everything," saidSonia, who said she often argued with her brother on their drivesto school because he would rather listen to the news on the radiothan music. He traveled to Italy as a freshman with the St. Francis SymphonicBand. He played football as a freshman and junior varsity soccer. Last year, he played with the school jazz band at Yoshi's inOakland and enjoyed summer camps and retreats with the youthministry at Abundant Life Christian Fellowship in Mountain View. "He traveled, made friends, connected with people of all ages andcolors," his father said. "He lived a rich and meaningful life.
