Generic may refer to as generic drugs or generics for short. According to the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), generic drugs are identical to the brand-name counterpart or within an acceptable bioequivalent range, with respect to pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamics properties. Generally, generic drugs are cheaper than the branded equivalents. The reason for this is the competition among manufacturers when a patent elapse for a certain drug. The other reason being, generic drugs are usually manufactured without the cost of testing and development that the original patent-holder incur. Thus, it results to lower production cost and at the same time, still manage to make profit. The manufacturers of generic drugs no longer need clinical trials since the effectiveness of the drug has already been proven by the brand name company. The cost of drug discovery is also not a burden for these manufacturers. They can simply create the same version of the existing drugs though reverse engineering. These generic drug manufacturers can also benefit from the previous advertisements made by the brand-name drug company and may already be in the market for decades.
