It’s obvious to say that steel and its related products have changed our life. They are building blocks of world in which we live. Definitely, not a caricature, it has proven its worth and today stands at a position that nothing is possible without its support. You can’t even imagine a small house, building not even your lifestyle you live without it. Everything we look around, cars, bridges, trains, motors, fans, almost everything is made up of steel. Since 1800s, it has carved its way and is playing an important role in constructing buildings. Steel was reluctant to fire and structurally sound, so were converted to steel beams for framing tall buildings. Since then, steel beams/bars were widely used in constructing tall buildings. Steel has got many specifications in which bright bar steel is one of them. It’s a form of carbon steel in which the main interstitial alloying constituent is carbon. Here, as the percentage of carbon gets increased, the bright bar steel gets harder and harder. This steel is made by passing it through the heat treatment process where its mechanical properties are determined. Appreciated for its high tensile strength, long shelf life and cost effectiveness, they are widely used in constructing buildings, automobile parts, bridges, trains, railway tracks and so on. As there are two sides of a coin, along with advantages they too have disadvantages that are as follows: • Corrodes in humid areas but if anti corrosive coating is used then corrosion can be avoided. • They are prone to conduct heat and electricity as steel is a good conductor of them. This too can be avoided if proper insulation is done wherever required. Last but not least I will conclude to write that steel is a boon to human kind that has changed our lives.
