Close Window Registered sex offender charged with two child-related crimes By Ann McCreary A registered sex offender living in Winthrop was arrested at hishome Saturday (May 19) and arraigned in Okanogan County SuperiorCourt Monday (May 21) on two charges of second-degree child rape. Jonathan Michael Day-Wedin, 18, of 314 Castle Ave., Winthrop, wasarrested following an investigation into an incident involving a13-year-old Twisp girl, according to Twisp Police Chief PaulBudrow. Day-Wedin was being held Tuesday in Okanogan County Jail on $75,000bail, according to the Okanogan County Sheriff"s office. Budrow said his department began an investigation last Wednesday(May 16) after receiving a call from a local resident who reportedbeing told by the victim about an incident that took place on March14. "I turned the case over to Mike Hartnett," Budrow saidin an interview this week. Hartnett is a Twisp police officer whohas specialized in investigating child abuse cases and teachescourses on interviewing children who are victims of abuse ormolestation. Budrow said Hartnett interviewed the girl on Friday. Day-Wedin wastaken into custody at his Winthrop residence on Saturday and wasinterviewed by Hartnett before being arrested and booked intocounty jail. Day-Wedin was convicted, as a juvenile, of first-degree incest inClark County in January of this year, according to information fromthe Okanogan County Sheriff"s office. He was convicted inconnection with the sexual assault of a 10-year-old family memberin 2006. He was sentenced to 10 days in jail and a year of courtsupervision, and was required to register as a sex offender. Day-Wedin was on file as a Level 1 sex offender – consideredthe lowest risk for committing another offense – in OkanoganCounty and was still under supervision when the alleged incidentinvolving the Twisp girl occurred. Day-Wedin also has convictions for malicious mischief, burglary,criminal trespass, drug paraphernalia and taking a motor vehiclewithout permission, according to the sheriff"s information. Budrow said he was pleased that the investigation into the incidentinvolving the Twisp girl was solved so quickly. "Having Mike(Hartnett) on board was phenomenal," Budrow said. In establishing $75,000 bail for Day-Wedin, the court set severalconditions for his release if he provides a bail bond, includingthat he establish residency, have no contact with female minors,not possess firearms or dangerous weapons, and not consume liquoror controlled substances not prescribed by a doctor.
