In 2011 to 2012, more than 61 per cent of Australians were either obese or overweight, that’s according to the fourth report released by the Council of Australian Governments (COAG). Guess what, during that year, I was included in that 61 per cent. My best friend died of heart failure last year. Her mum said it has something to do with her being obese. I stopped smoking because it can kill. I’ve read before that a British study has found that smoking shortens life span by at least ten years. But then I also learned that obesity has overtaken smoking as the leading cost of illness and premature death in Australia. Knowing that my best friend used to weigh almost the same as I was, that hit me hard and scared the hell out of me. “She has gotten even fatter!” I overheard a college friend – during the funeral.. yeah, pestering my ears while I was mourning. To me, that sounded more like, “she’ll die of a heart attack next, ‘cause she’s getting way too fat.” That was my breaking point. I’m not young anymore, and probably it’s high time to live and eat healthy. Lifestyle Changes It’s not that easy shifting from fast food to home-cooked meals. Sure, cooking every few days can be fun. But with all the meal-planning and shopping that is required, cooking everyday could burn you out. Guilty. How many times do I have to battle against my head when it’s craving for pizza? How many times do I have to force myself to cook real food? In the real world, cooking is work. It’s a burden. But I lost 52 pounds. I conquered comfort eating. I conquered a mountain. I lost majority of the weight by walking and doing ‘Zumba’. Changing the way I ate has been a sacrifice that paid off. Cutting out red meat, high-calorie and fatty foods, and drinking a ton of water are true life changers. The only challenge was when preparing food for large functions. I can’t risk eating unhealthy dishes everytime there’s a special occasion. I’ve no time nor skills to cook for like a hundred guests either. Healthy Caterers Exist Here’s the good news. Amid the sea of fat-soaked food choices that saturate the menus of catering industries in Australia, I uncovered some brilliant picks. A Melbourne-based Spit Roast, BBQ and Finger Food catering, Victorian Golden Roast offers fresh and healthy dishes. I discovered this gourmet caterer when we had a Finger Food party for 50 people and Victorian Golden Roast catered the event. My top favourite is the smoked salmon. It was served on Melba Toast and topped with Ricotta cheese. King Prawn Tails and Chicken Breast Goujons served with a chilli plum dipping sauce were some of the heart and healthy picks that day. Everything was ‘real food’ served on garnished platters. Great service overall. No one was kept waiting. You can check out the caterer’s menu here.
