Read Psalms 137: 8-9 8 O daughter of Babylon, you devastated one, How blessed will be the one who repays you With the recompense with which you have repaid us. 9 How blessed will be the one who seizes and dashes your little ones Against the rock. This is a scripture that many unbelievers grab onto to show how unloving the Christian God is. Once again as I have said many times over that it is simply a clear misunderstanding of scripture and taken out of context. Psalm 137 was written by a witness to the captivity of Judah. Witness to unbelievable acts of savagery and brutality by the Chaldean soldiers in 587 B.C. He saw them literally snatch infants from their mothers’ clutch and throw them into walls! How horrible would this be to see? Even more horrible this was happening to God’s people! As well as horrible brutality there were blasphemies hurled about on top of all this. Would it not be natural for ANYONE to want retribution? The witness felt entirely justified in asking God to enable His law for retribution against these pagans. It was a prayer for justice and for God’s divine intervention. Deuteronomy 32: 35-36 35 ‘Vengeance is Mine, and retribution, In due time their foot will slip; For the day of their calamity is near, And the impending things are hastening upon them.’ 36 “For the Lord will vindicate His people, And will have compassion on His servants, When He sees that their strength is gone, And there is none remaining, bond or free. The cry that the “Old Testament God is a Moral Monster” as some famous Atheist claims (of course a lot of misunderstanding there), there is still scripture in the New Testament to heed: The Fifth Seal; Revelation 6:9-10 reads; 9 When the Lamb broke the fifth seal, I saw underneath the altar the souls of those who had been slain because of the word of God, and because of the testimony which they had maintained; 10 and they cried out with a loud voice, saying, “How long, O Lord, holy and true, will You refrain from judging and avenging our blood on those who dwell on the earth?” As scripture tells us to pray to God for him to destroy the wickedness of this world for what it truly deserves, and that is destruction!
