Naturopathic medical schools were in abundance at the turn of the 20th century, but after the Flexner Report was published in 1910 by individuals who backed Big Pharma, naturopathic medicine began its descent into the abyss. It wasn’t until 1956 that it resurfaced in Portland, Oregon at National College of Naturopathic Medicine. Since this time, the profession was virtually unknown; however, this has been slowly changing with years past. At the present moment there are 5,000 practicing naturopathic physicians in North America, a number that has tripled in the last 10 years. Currently, there are 7 approved schools in North America and Canada. These schools are accredited by the Council on Naturopathic Medical Education (CNME). Prior to graduating all individuals must pass a two part series of the Naturopathic Physicians Licensing Examinations (NPLEX) which is required for licensure to practice medicine. The approved naturopathic medicals schools are the following: • Bastyr University, established in 1978, is located in Kenmore, Washington. It possesses the largest campus of all the approved schools. It has 2 locations, one in Kenmore (just north of Seattle) and the other in San Diego which had its first class in September of 2012. Bastyr offers degrees in naturopathic medicine, oriental medicine and acupuncture, ayurvedic medicine, herbal medicine and nutrition, to name a few. • Boucher Institute of Naturopathic Medicine (BINM), established in 1999, is located in New Westminister, British Columbia, Canada. Boucher prides itself on using a small cohort model of education, with class sizes of approximately 30 students, which through certain studies has shown to enhance the learning process. Most of all, this school is located in the pristine natural beauty of the mountains, forests and beaches which goes unrivaled to any other college. • Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine (CCNM), founded in 1978, is located in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. CCNM prides itself in offering the lowest tuition and the largest teaching clinic of all the colleges. On a busy day, their 4th year interns treat over 100 patients a day that the Robert Schad Naturopathic Clinic. Similar to most naturopathic colleges, they also have a large student population. • National College of Naturopathic Medicine is located in Portland, Oregon. It boasts itself as the original naturopathic medical college founded in 1956. It offers dual degrees in both naturopathic medicine and Classical Chinese medicine. It also has a School of Research and Graduate Studies. The combined three schools put the student population between 500-600 students. • National University of Health Sciences, established in 2000, is located in Lombard, Illinois, United States. Like Bastyr, it also offers degrees in other medical specialties outside of naturopathic medicine such as oriental medicine, chiropractic medicine, biomedical science, and massage therapy for those who want to add other disciplines to their training. From 1995-2010, National University has received 5 million dollars in federal grant funding for research. • Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine, established in 1992, is located in Tempe, Arizona. SCNM is the only school which adheres to a curriculum which consists of 14 consecutive quarters in 4 calendar years. They also have a research department which works with ASU. If you like constant sunshine and sweltering heat in the summer, this is the place for you. • University of Bridgeport – ND program, established in 1996, is located in Bridgeport, Connecticut. Similar to NUHS and Bastyr, it also has numerous programs in the health sciences other than naturopathic medicine. And like BINM it also has a small class size with long standing faculty members.
