Federal Grants: There are approximately 26 federal grant agencies that offer over a thousand federal government grants assistance opportunities. Federal government assistance helps organizations and groups implement programs in approximately 21 areas including education, arts, health, agriculture, business, humanities, etc. Federal Government College Grants: Federal government college grants are provided to students who demonstrate financial need, displaced workers who need to get retrained in order to compete and re-join the workforce, and students enrolled in a post baccalaureate teaching certificate program. Federal grants for students do not need to be repaid, nor do the applicants need good credit to be eligible, and there are no application fees. The following are some types of grants for college students: • Federal Pell Grant - This need-based grant is awarded to low-income undergraduate students and some students enrolled in a post-baccalaureate teaching certificate program. Pell Grants are free and do not have to be repaid like student loans. The grant can be used at most accredited postsecondary institutions and is awarded based on your FAFSA (Free application for Federal Student Aid). • Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant - This federal grant is awarded to undergraduate students who have received a Pell Grant and have exceptional financial need. Students can get $100 to $4,000 each school yeardepending on the student's financial need, the college they are attending and other school financial aid policies.Pell Grant recipients are given a rating called a lowest expected family contribution (EFC) in determining how much grant aid they will receive and they are considered for the FSEOG first. The FSEOG grant does not have to be paid either. The money is paid to directly to the college and excess funds are distributed to the student. • Academic Competitiveness Grant - This supplemental grant is awarded to first and second year students who demonstrate academic merit and were also awarded a Federal Pell Grant. Students can get $750 for their first year of study and another $1,300 for their second year. • National SMART Grant - The National Science and Mathematics Access to Retain Talent (SMART) Grant is a supplementary grant awarded to science, math, computer, technology and engineering students who are in their third or fourth year of study. This $4,000 grant is awarded to students who are eligible for Pell grants. • TEACH Grant - This $4,000 grant is awarded to undergraduate, post-baccalaureate and graduate students who promise to teach in an elementary or secondary school (public or private) that caters to low income students.The student's college must participates in the TEACH Grant Program, and the student must agree to meet the specific requirements of the grant as well as sign a Teach Grant Agreement to Serve.
