The "Less is More" Principle of Enterprise Mobility

Science & Technology,Software,Telecommuting
Recently I was having a conversation with my co-workers on how many features and business functions we should put in one business app. I intentionally raised this topic because it has often been a confusing question to answer for entrepreneurs because of the huge influx of new users and the number of apps being developed. At the end of the discussion, one thing that I was sure about that we don’t need just one monolithic app with numerous functions stuffed in it. Rather, we can work efficiently with multiple enterprise apps channelized to conclude different business functions. The concept of one app/business is certainly appealing, but if we break that into different parts, it would give users more tangible and visible results.

In general, we use an app for purposes like checking emails, project tracking, note taking, personal to-do-list, file management etc. If we have different apps to solve each of these problems, it would become hugely advantageous and time saving for us. Moreover, often these apps receive instant popularity in comparison to one single app. Suppose you see your colleague doing something with his app that can be completed quickly with your app. You will quickly recommend it to him/her and summarize how it works better than his/her app. This would skyrocket the number of users of that particular app.

Another very surprising thing with these channelized apps is how users can use them innovatively in a number of tasks. Of course, you can get all the features packed in just one app but a cluster of apps is more capable of creating new and efficient workflows. Smaller enterprise apps help you keep your context throughout the day. In one app/business concept, often employees lose their context within the employee directory and he has to start searching his co-workers all over again. What makes things worse is that as soon as they do this, they lose the context of the meeting that they had just created. With smaller apps for this, you can easily switch between them while maintaining the context.

With some exceptions here and there, most enterprise apps come in the category of in and out apps. In and out category means, you would get in them, use them and get out upon completion. Enterprise apps used for checking the next meeting schedule, its propaganda, flight status, approving expense report and other temporary tasks come in this category. By having small apps, we can save time used to reach the main section of the app and get the needed information. They will also give our thumb some rest by reducing the number of taps we do right from entering the app to exiting it. Users love easy things and a small and easy app would be another thing loved by them. In addition, if you need to take a number of steps before getting the actual information you require, you would surely get frustrated.

It is not that only by keeping focussed approach towards your app development, you can make it feature rich. Many apps can be illustrated as examples in this context. One such enterprise app is focussed towards the point that they have released the suit of companion apps for targeting new users, taking notes. Although in one instance, you cannot find the features of this app but as you use it, you would discover many more features and ways to use them. Being focussed doesn't mean you cannot add more features into your enterprise app. It just means that you should go for one thing in your app and spin the web of your activities around it.
