The tide appears to have turned in the Connecticut boating sector'sfavor heading into the Greenwich Boat Show this weekend. "Since the fall, really since the Norwalk Boat show, our sales havebeen very busy," said Nathan Gottlieb , owner of All Seasons Marine Works, one of the founding sixdealers of the show. Now in its fifth year, the Greenwich Boat Show, held at Beacon Point Marine in Cos Cob, has expanded to nine dealers. It's free to the public.More than 80 boats will be on display in the water and visitors cantake them out for a ride during the show. Organizers would preferpeople pre-register for the sea trials. Gottlieb said used boats are in high demand and there's even beensome price appreciation, which has helped increase new boat salesto the point where dealers are having trouble getting new vesselsin. A year ago, yacht dealers reported their sales were steady forboats above $200,000 as the wealthy class continued to be stableenough to remain in the game. But sales of boats in the state wereslow and overall boat ownership underwent a decline. According to the State Department of Motor Vehicles and the Coast Guard ,there were 105,499 boats registered in Connecticut at the end of2011. That's a drop from 108,078 in 2010, according to Bill Seymour , a DMV spokesman. "Gas prices will do that," said Seymour, who has a home inNarragansett, R.I., where he said boating's problems are obvious. "I see a lot of boats parked," he said. But things are turning, according to Gottlieb, as interest inownership has expanded into entry-level seacraft again. Gottlieb said this year, the most popular price point is under$50,000 and over $120,000, but so far the middle of the market hasnot yet come back. Karen Piscatelli, marketing director at Beacon Point, said themarket has changed since last year's show. "We had two-peoplepre-register for sea trials last year," she said in a telephoneinterview on Thursday. "This year, we already have 21." And next year's show is already shaping up to be bigger, Piscatellisaid, as she's been contacted by dealers outside the stateinterested in participating. This year's boat show will feature All Seasons, Beacon Point,Catalano and Sons, Diamond Marine, Harborside Yacht Sales, MarineMax, Norwest Marine, Portland Boat Works and Twin Hull Boats.
