An onondaga lake turning point: it's time to clean and reclaim - Large Diameter Steel Tube

Business,Business News,Business Opportunities
When the slurry gets to the disposal site east of Airport Road inCamillus, it will be run through a series of screens and filters toremove stones and other debris, then pumped into heavy-duty plastictubes that are 9½ feet in diameter and 300 feet long. Waterwill drain from the tubes, leaving the contaminated sediment. Whenthe tubes are full, they will be stacked and encapsulated in alined containment area. The water that drains out will be piped into a large wastetreatment plant built on the site.

Mercury and other toxicchemicals will be removed before the water is pumped for finaltreatment at the county's Metropolitan Sewage TreatmentPlant. The water will then return to the lake. The entire round trip, from the lake to Camillus to the Metro plantand back into the lake, will take two to three hours, Honeywellofficials say. After the dredging is finished and all the sediment is encapsulatedand covered with dirt and vegetation, the treatment plant will bedismantled. Two other treatment facilities built for the cleanup will continueto operate indefinitely.

One, on Willis Avenue, treats thegroundwater trapped by the steel wall along the lake. The other, atthe former LCP Chemicals site off Bridge Street in Geddes, treatsthe groundwater there. Homes designed for fish Honeywell has deployed three dredges on the lake. The largest, known as Marlin, is doing most of the work while two smaller ones ply hard-to-reachareas.

The dredges will dig down as much as 9 feet in some areas, but theaverage depth of dredging will be 5.7 feet. The dredges areequipped with computers and GPS devices that can detect thetopography of the lake bottom within an inch or two and help directthe digging. All of the work will be done on the west, southwest and south sidesof the lake. Some areas will be dug out and then capped; lesscontaminated areas will simply be capped.

In all, only about 6 percent of the 3,000-acre lake bottom will bedredged, although about 14 percent will be capped with sand andgravel. For the first two years, the cleanup will focus on the southwestand southern sides of the lake, south of Exit 7 — the statefair exit — off of I-690 West. That's where thecontamination from Allied entered the lake — and where thesteel barrier now keeps it out. In 2014, the work will move further north, where toxins —mainly mercury — from LCP Chemicals entered the lake. Thechemicals went from the plant into Geddes Brook, which leads intoNinemile Creek and then the lake.

As the dredging is completed in one small area, that area will becapped with a mix of sand, gravel and carbon while the diggingmoves on to another area. The capping will go on for five years— a year longer than the dredging. Along the lakeshore staging area just south of Exit 7, huge pilesof sand and gravel are stored for the capping. They represent atiny fraction of all the fill material that will be trucked to thesite and poured back into the lake from two barges.

On the recommendation of wildlife biologists, large stones and evenlogs will be placed above the sand and gravel mix in some areas tocreate habitats for different species of fish. "There are two reasons we're dredging," said JohnMcAuliffe, Syracuse program director for Honeywell. "One isto take out the contaminants, and the second is to leave the lakebottom at the right depth so it's optimum for the return ofthe vegetation and the fish." Â Creek rerouted The wetlands project Honeywell is leading — with help fromTerrestrial Environmental Specialists of Phoenix, the SUNY Collegeof Environmental Science and Forestry and others — is perhapsthe most unheralded aspect of the cleanup. Honeywell already has created a thriving wetland at the former LCPsite, transforming what was a dry area overrun with phragmites(frag-MITE-eez), an invasive, aggressive reed that crowds out localspecies.

It is now finishing up the transformation of an area around GeddesBrook. Crews built a stone dam to divert the stream into a holdingpond, cleared the land of phragmites, removed thousands of cubicyards of soil and rerouted the stream bed from a straight channelinto a twisty, meandering creek where native plants and wildlifecan flourish. Last week, workers were putting in some of the 50,000 plants thatwill go in that area and using shovels to firm up the newly createdstream banks. Within the next few weeks, the makeshift dam will beremoved and water will begin flowing into the new creek bed.

Thearea should be a fully functioning wetland by spring. Similar work is being done at Ninemile Creek, although that work isabout a year behind the Geddes Brook project. On the lakeshore, several wetlands will be restored as the cleanupcontinues, making the habitat less inviting to phragmites and morewelcoming to a variety of native species to be planted there. There will also be features added to create a better habitat alongthe lake for humans. Honeywell will construct a boat launch nearExit 7 and an observation deck for invited guests to view theongoing dredging project.
