Your Zombie Survival Plan, Will It Work?

Education,Hobbies,Self Improvement
Zombie shows and movies are abound for Americans of late. Dance of the Dead, Planet Terror, Shaun of the Dead, just to list a few. It's likely that these shows made you think about what life would be like if the zombie apocalypse actually did occur. You've talked with your buddies, made jokes and partial plans about what you should do.

However…

If you are like most others, you think you have a zombie contingency plan. A unique and idiot proof strategy they have spent hours contemplating that ensures they and other family will stay alive in the instance of a zombie apocalypse. The simple problem? You've got the very same essential plan as everybody else: raid the gun shop, get out of the city as quickly as possible, find a sturdy cave in order to fortify and hole up inside, use a melee weapon whenever you can to conserve ammo and--if the worst does come to pass and you are facing down a crowd with the undead--take your time, aim very carefully and make every shot a head shot.

Update!

You're not gonna get past the first minute! Here's the reason:

1. Raiding the Weapon Store
First things first: You need a gun! The time for feel good gun control ran out the window the second Uncle Earl returned from the afterlife to make a snack out of your brains. No matter how you felt ahead of the uprising, you love the 2nd Amendment now. You want the greatest, baddest monstrosity available. Maybe you will find there's a gun that can empty one thousand round clip a sec, or just maybe there's a gun that may turn those bullets into fireballs and your prayers have been answered! Or maybe you will find there's a gun that shoots nano-bots which could eat through anything they touch. But even if you already have the most futuristic firearms at your disposal, you're still not ready. You should arm everybody in your group, so you need spares just in case, and you need ammo. In short, you need to get on to the gun store.
The only problem being: So does everybody else.
The closest gun shop to your house is also the closest gun shop with a thousand other people's houses, and at least a few dozen of them are likely to get there before you. Assuming that the place isn't already cleaned out (probably since the shop is either locked down, or because the owners usually are holed up inside and wish to keep what they have) you still have to aquire your own arsenal. So you see, owners of gun stores like guns, and the ones that like guns not only generally need to keep them, but are also quite effective at using them.

Now you and a thousand other people are on the exterior of a suburban fortress, shouting"pretty pleases... with cherries on top" at the heavily-armed, trained marksman inside. Not only are you probably not coming away from the gun store with a new shiny new weapon; you'd be lucky to get free from there without looking down the barrel of death.

2 Escape Town
A major city is the absolute worst place to be in the instance of a zombie uprising. The human population density alone spells trouble, so the farther you can get away from civilization, the better! At the very first signal of trouble, you need to get right out of there. The truth is, everybody does. And what happens when everybody in the city needs to get somewhere simultaneously? Like, say, during rush hr? That's right: deadlock.
Blindly following your knee-jerk flee response has dropped you straight in the middle of Mega Rush Hour, a terrible place where you sit futilely trapped within a confined space, surrounded by people that may or may not already be infected, but are certainly standing around looking delicious for the zombie army. You just wanted to get out at once, but now look at you: Stuck in an un-moving meat-line with a thousand other tasty morsels.

3. Your Hideout
Protection, food & water, are the three main resources necessary to sustain human life. So it stands to reason that you should find some place to hole up in and stay there until the zombie apocalypse blows over…right?
Not Quite!
Trying to protect a stronghold only works when there is a possibility that the attacking force will stop at some point. But Zombies are not people, and they will not stop until they are stopped. They cannot be reasoned with, and the only supplies they need are stuck in the stronghold together with you.
Zombies don't get bored, sad, or even impatient, they don't need anything to keep them alive (they're already dead), and they're not really known for their logical evaluation: They will not debate the cons in the attack. They just want heads. They will wait for people forever. But you will be depleted of supplies soon, and each day you stay put in your bunker is another day zombies pile up outside. Zombies can be a threat because they multiply. All "holing up" in the stationary location does is make the zombies need it more.

4. Conserve Ammo: Use Melee Weapons When Possible
The zombie apocalypse will probably be a nasty place, and the majority of us manage to get ER-worthy injuries when we put together Sauder furniture. In summary: You're gonna have open wounds, and destroying zombie heads can spew a fair volume of blood about. So when all zombie body fluids infect, blood included, then receiving a bite is the least of your worries. So let's say you don't spend your time to yourself reading about zombies online and are a individual at your peak. Go outside and find the nearest, smallest wild animal. OK, now get it and make an effort to take a bite from it.
How did you fare? Did you manage to get even a lick out that neighbors puppy?
If you didn't manage to get a taste of that animal, well, it show my intent nicely: Grabbing a reluctant victim with your bare hands and having a bite isn't easy. Animals need to live, and they are likely to move around a lot whenever you attempt to eat them, just like you will when grabbed by a zombie. Just avoiding bites is not the problem. Bashing in a head at close range means you will definitely get blood everywhere; if you'd so much as some sort of scrape, now you're some sort of zombie. It's much better to use up some of your ammo supply, rather than risk taking a red shower in skull leavings from the infectious zombie.

5. Aim for the Head!
Everybody knows the only surefire way in order to kill a zombie is always to destroy the brain, and we've already established that you would like to be as far away as possible when you do that, so at some point in time you're going to be shooting zombies in the head. Relax. It became OK for men to cry somewhere around the time you were required to blow your wife's undead face apart.
Yes, headshots are the only method to kill the undead, but not the only method to stop them. A broken leg it isn't just a figure of speech; it's still a leg that is certainly broken. As in, it does not work anymore. Regardless of the degree of pain you are able to register, a shattered femur or even severed spine renders something essentially immobile. So quickly spraying waist-level fire into an approaching onslaught can be a far better idea in comparison with lining up headshots with regard to bonus points.
So what's the finish point here? A slow, crawling zombie is a zombie which is easy to get away from. Obviously the more you can kill the better, but don't waste time lining up perfect shots when you simply need to get away.

The conclusion:
Now that you are done reading this your first reaction might feel like I just kicked your trike in the ditch. I blew some holes in your plans and opened your eyes to how badly you happen to be prepared. Your Outdoor Survival Kit is distorted, and your plan is even worse. The good news, however, is that you've still got time to get ready. Since you want a survival kit for many different emergencies, start there. After you could start stocking up on weapons and ammo. Then you can begin scouting your surrounding areas for a fall back point if perhaps you need to leave your home.
