Like any hobby, we can become bored and disinterested in photography if we don’t make the effort to renew our love of it every once in a while. Photography is a creative and rewarding hobby, but if you find that you have been disappointed in your photographs recently you may have packed your equipment away and vowed never to take it out again. If you really feel like you need to do something to renew your faith in your favourite hobby, here are some things you can do. If you find you really are photographed out, take a break. Sometimes a break from something is a good thing and all you need is a little time to regroup. If you have an important family event coming up, assign the picture taking duties to someone else and relax. Often we become frantic that we want to get the best shot of something, like a trip or a wedding, and we forget to relax and enjoy the moment. When an important event comes along that you absolutely must take photos of limit yourself to how many shots you take. Digital photography has made it possible for us to shoot hundreds of photos if we want to without worrying about cost, which is great, but in some cases this can become a disadvantage. When you know you can keep shooting there’s a danger that you will obsessively keep taking pictures searching for that elusive perfect shot. Stop yourself! Take a few photos and then put the camera away. Often the reason we lose interest in photography is because we have spent too many hours taking pictures of the same thing. Changing up what you normally take photos of may be all you need to get you back in to the swing of things. If you have spent many years taking photos of people and family members, maybe it is time to concentrate on landscapes or wildlife or vice versa. Relax and enjoy the photos you shoot instead of constantly striving for perfection. Photographers love to take the best shots possible every time they pick up the camera, but this can lead to them being hypercritical and putting undo pressure on themselves. Unless you are making a living as a photographer remember that your photos don’t have to be perfect. Give yourself a break and enjoy your hobby again. Sometimes taking a photography course will get the creative juices flowing again. There are plenty of resources online that can help you learn new skills or sign up to take a course at your local camera store with other photographers of your skill level. Getting together with people who share your interests can help you to become enthusiastic about your craft again and learning with a group of like-minded people builds new friendships and new confidence in your abilities. Photography is a great hobby and a satisfying creative outlet if you relax and try not to be perfect at it. Take the time to learn to love your hobby again, you’ll be happy that you did.
