The petition comes a week after the labor board clarified elementsof who can and can t vote in a first round of elections. USU-NEAhas been organizing to give all 1,500 professional staffers theopportunity to vote to join a union. In its petition today it seeksto give a first group of administrative and technical staff thatchoice, comprising a bargaining unit of about 830 people. The difference between the 830 staff members that USU-NEA is filingfor and the others is the designation of non-exempt (eligiblefor overtime pay) and exempt (exempt from overtime pay). The USU-NEA will continue to work on organizing the remaining exempt staff members. While it is impossible to predict when the labor board will give agreen light to an election, USU-NEA is confident that its filingwill be found to be valid, since it follows the parameters set bylast week s labor board ruling. We are excited to once again file to give those of us without aunion a chance to vote, said Michele Patenaude, a member of theUSU-NEA leadership team who works at the Bailey Howe Library oncampus. Despite more than a decade of previous unsuccessfulattempts by others, we are actually close to bringing about anelection. We are hopeful now that the unit we are proposing isexactly the unit the university itself has proposed, we can do whatothers have promised for years: give staff a chance to join aunion. USU-NEA said that it will work quickly to bring about an election.Already, the union s leadership team has spoken to nearly 1,300professional staff members about the unionization effort. Ourstrategy is simple, Patenaude said. We believe that the mosteffective union is one that is run by us, but that has the strongbacking of a national union. Where others claim they can go italone, we know better. By joining together and forming a union, wewill be able to ensure that UVM continues to be a rewarding placeto work, and one where we have a say in our pay, benefits andworking conditions. USU-NEA will be a part of the Vermont-NEA family. Vermont-NEA,which represents the vast majority of public school teachers inVermont, was invited to campus by USU-NEA leaders. Vermont-NEAhas a staff of 22, including three of the state s most highlyregarded labor lawyers, and a team of field representatives whohave, collectively, assisted in bargaining more than 5,000contracts over the last 40 years. Nationally, the NEA and itsaffiliates represent more than 200,000 men and women who work onuniversity and college campuses.
