With great power comes great responsibility. This statement has never been truer than in the current globalized Indian climate. If so much of our country is run for – and by – corporations, it should follow that corporation should be equally invested in the overall well-being of the nation. CSR in India should be far more than what it is today: an obligation for those who care little and a distant dream for those who care just about enough. The primary objectives of India’s CSR initiatives should be to support the needs of marginalized communities, bridge the vast gap between the rich and the poor, enhance the education sector, work towards a feasible healthcare program and nurse the ailing ecosystem. Any CSR initiative that looks into not only responding to immediate issues that concern this generation but also works towards building an ideal society for future generations, has the basic recipe for success. Another durable CSR practice would be to engage with stakeholders who will partner on the journey to more sustainable business practices. Business partners who share in your CSR ideologies are more likely to propel your own work in the area and, better still, accelerate it. A responsible business should offers a host of products, services and solutions to its stakeholders and partners that will help make their own businesses sustainable. Further, employee engagement should be encouraged and appreciated, if a company intends for its CSR initiatives to truly come from within. A holistic approach as discussed above can lead to more specific goals that can be reached. Focusing on conservation can lead to efficient energy and greenhouse gas efficiency, water efficiency and waste management. Initiatives in education can lead to the tangible benefit of children from various backgrounds gain an education that may have otherwise been inaccessible to them.
