Turkey runs have become a wide-spread tradition across the nation over the years, and the Outer Banks is no exception. Americans highly anticipate an indulgent Thanksgiving feast, so perhaps the event serves as justification to eat that second helping of mashed potatoes or a giant slice of homemade pumpkin pie. Whatever the reason, millions of runners participate in these events every year, and you can join them. The event is hosted by Hatteras Village and presented by the Hatteras Island Youth Education Fund (HIYEF) and OBX GO FAR (Go Out For A Run) children’s program. Both of these honorable organizations are dedicated to helping children on Hatteras Island and the Outer Banks of North Carolina in the areas of education and enrichment. The proceeds raised at the event will fund the Hatteras Island Youth Education Fund as well as OBX GO FAR children’s program in support of the youth across Dare County. OBX GO FAR is an 8-week comprehensive fitness program for children that promotes physical activity, healthy eating, and good character. Your registration will contribute towards those families who are less fortunate and are unable to afford the program for their children. This road race will take place in beautiful Hatteras Village, and it will start and finish at the Hatteras Village Civic Center. Perhaps the best part is that everyone gets a hot breakfast upon completion! Carolina Brewery will also provide fresh microbrew beer for race participants 21 and over. And maybe you’re responsible for dessert at your family dinner that evening—great! The first place male and female will both take home a delicious surprise dessert made specially to be enjoyed with your Thanksgiving meal. Race Details: • When: Thanksgiving Day - Thursday, November 28, 2013 • Where: Hatteras Village Civic Center 56658 NC Highway 12 Hatteras, NC • Time: Surfin’ Turkey 5K starts 8:00 a.m. Drumstick Dash ½ Mile Fun Run starts 9:00 a.m. • Registration: Open now through race day (until full) Surfin’ Turkey 5K: $25/person before 11/20/13 or $30/person after 11/20/13 – includes goody bag, t-shirt, and post-race celebration with pancake breakfast and Carolina Brewery beer (for racers 21 years and older) Drumstick Dash Fun Run: $15/person – includes t-shirt and pose-race pancake breakfast Because this is promoted as a family fun event, it is not a timed race. However, if the competitor in you wants to know your finish time, you may wear a watch or time yourself using the race clock at the finish line. With the exception of severe inclement weather, the race will go on rain or shine. But because this is a charity event, registration fees are non-refundable in the unlikely event of cancellation due to safety reasons.
