Not all of us look at our hot tub on a freezing cold winter’s night and decide to get in and enjoy its warmth. Some of us do, though! If you are going to use your hot tub or spa during the winter or not, you still need to prepare it for the cold weather. These few tips will make it easy to be sure that your hot tub is a place of relaxation during the winter if that is your thing, or ready for you when the weather warms up. - Do not empty your hot tub for the winter months. Even if you are not going to be using your hot tub, you should not empty it. The water in the hot tub will actually allow you to do other troubleshooting measures to be sure that the freezing temperatures do not cause any damage. Also, a hot tub that has no water in it is actually more susceptible to freezing temperatures than one that is full.
- Use a hot tub or spa cover that can withstand the winter months in your location. A cover that can withstand extreme weather is designed to handle piles of snow and is made with thicker insulation to help keep your water and hottub from freezing.
- Buy a winter cover cap. A cover cap goes over your hot tub cover to protect it from the ice and snow during the winter months. You easily remove it from the hot tub to remove snow build up without having to shovel anything. Cover caps are not as expensive as hot tub covers and will help your cover last longer.
- Use your heater. It is okay to leave it on. It will cost money to leave it running, but it could save you money by preventing damage that can happen when the water freezes. Just leaving it on during the coldest times is better than not using at all.
- Run your jets often when it is cold enough for the water to freeze. The heater will protect most of the hot tub by not letting the water freeze, but it does not protect the plumping under the hot tub from freezing. Running the jets multiple times throughout the day an evening will help prevent them from freezing.
- Use a submersible pump at the bottom of your hot tub. The pump will keep the water circulating so it is less likely to freeze. The heat that the pump generates just by running will also help warm the water.
- Keep the water balanced. Even if you are not going to use your hot tub until it warms up again, you should keep the water balanced. High levels of acid and oxidation are capable of causing damage to your hot tub and your cover.
Maintaining your hot tub during the winter months will protect your investment and allow you to use your hot tub for years to come. Remember that winter maintenance is necessary even if you are not going to use your hot tub during the winter months.
