Getting tired of having the your unit be repaired in an aircon service center or completely buying a new one after every few years? Having your air conditioning unit last as long as possible is no small feat. The average lifespan for an air conditioner is 10 to 15 years but still depending on the quality and the upkeep of the appliance. Here are some steps to take to keep it running efficiently. 1. Cover window units on the inside and outside of the house. Doing this step keeps the unit weather proof and protects it from the outside air and other elements. Keep a close eye on your unit especially during winter since snow can seep and corrode it. There is also the problem of mold growth which can be prevented if it remains covered. Aside from covering it, wash the outside of the condensing unit every month by hosing it down. 2. Protect ducts and change the filter periodically. Give yourself the best quality airflow by making sure that the filter is replaced every 2 or 3 months. Have the ducts cleaned since it can quickly get dusty and dirty. If you have allergies, change it more often. Also check the ductwork for leaks in case there are any holes for the air to escape. If there are any holes or leaks, replace or seal it with duct tape depending on the type of ductwork. Invest in an extra wrap of insulation backed with foil around the ducts 3. Check regularly if air conditioner is cooling efficiently. Compare the temperature of the air coming from the vent to the temperature of the air going back into the return air vent. This way you can know if there is a clogged air filter or if the unit is low on Freon. Maintenance is important since faulty air conditioners can use a lot of electricity resulting to a costly electric bill. For longevity, set the thermostat at a normal temperature to avoid making the unit "work" harder. Remember to turn off your air conditioner on cooler days so it can rest. Having it operational 24/7 can cause undue wear and tear. These are three important tips to ensure longevity of an air conditioner. Keep it clean inside and out. Maintain the filter and ducts. Check if cooling system is working properly.
