LONDON (Mineweb) - What is it about men and their toys - and the basic desire to proveoneself in what are certain to be potentially hostile and demandingexercises - all in the name of charity of course? The above saidwith a certain degree of male envy, although the writer, neverhaving been a biker, would probably prefer to make such a trip inan altogether more comfortable type of vehicle. So what's the above all about? Randgold Resources chief executiveMark Bristow has just departed on a 6,500 mile (10,500 kilometre),six-man expedition from Bagshot, England, to Abidjan, Côted'Ivoire, on specially modified Yamaha motorbikes. Most of thejourney will take place on the same route as the Budapest-BamakoGreat African Run, the largest amateur car rally in the world. Todo so requires a rather large detour from England via Hungary - buton European roads that should be a doddle for the intrepid team. Bristow will be accompanied on the trip by his sons Craig and Grantas well as friends Rob Alexander, Rocky Boulanger and Rob Beaumont. |
The expedition, which is expected to take 36 day and has beendubbed 3boyzonbike s after Bristow and his sons, is the second such trip undertaken byBristow who is obviously no novice on a motorbike. The first trip - from Cape Town to Cairo - took place in 2009, lasted 48 daysand crossed nine African countries. Additionally, Bristow led agroup of senior Randgold geologists on a bike excursion in 2010 toRandgold's operations and projects in West Africa, raising moneyfor a range of humanitarian projects in Mali, Côte d'Ivoireand Senegal. The current expedition will traverse 17 countries: England,France, Brussels, Germany, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary,Austria, Italy, Switzerland, France, Spain, Morocco, WesternSahara, Mauritania, Senegal and Mali (see map below).
They willkeep an online journal of their adventure on . The route. The purpose of the expedition, like that of its forerunners, is tobe a fundraising vehicle for a number of charitable causesincluding the Julian Baring Fund, which supports the education andcareer advancement of geologists and mining engineers in Africa,The Good News Orphan and Vulnerable Children's Home in Malawi,Caring 4 Kids With Cancer, and the ‘Nos Vies en Partage'(Sharing In Our Lives) fund, which was established by Mark withRandgold and its West African business partners and has raised overUS$300,000 for disadvantaged people and communities in West Africato date. Bristow will have a communications system with him which willenable him to work during the ride stay in touch with operations24/7. The route chosen will also enable him to meet governmentofficials in Dakar, Bamako and Abidjan and will be working in hisannual exploration trip (where he visits all Randgold's explorationprojects) as well as visiting all the west African mines.
And hewill formally be handing over donations along the route. Definitely a working trip!
