It probably seems like just yesterday that your son or daughter was toddling around the house, learning their first words and delighting at every new experience the world had to offer. Now, it is time to send your baby off to college. It is hard to believe the years flew by so quickly. The next few months you have with your child will be over before you know it too. It is best to help your student start planning ahead for everything they will need while they are off at school. You have gotten them ready for many new school years before, but this one will take more preparation than ever before. Where will your child be living while taking classes? Most students start out in a dorm room on campus. This type of environment is a great place for students to make new friends. Plus, these residences are usually centrally located to all of the places they will need to go on campus. If your child has secured a dorm room for the first year at college, they will need bedding materials and a few other essentials in order to be as comfortable as possible. Dorm rooms are not the most spacious of accommodations, but they certainly offer enough room for everything a student needs to succeed academically. Sit down with your child and make a list of things the two of you think he or she will need. This list might include things like a mirror, microwave, basic eating utensils, trash can, coffee maker, cleaning products, laundry hamper, and much more. You probably have at least some of these things already lying around your house. Do not be tempted to go on a dorm room-shopping spree and buy duplicates. College is already going to cost you enough as it is. Plus, you can bet your son or daughter will definitely be hitting you up for money as the semester progresses. If you save on the outset, you will have more to give them as the year goes by. Another thing you should be prepared to do is get your student on the college cafeteria's meal plan. You can pay for their meals in advance, usually by loading a meal card with a certain amount of money at the beginning of every semester. These cards can typically be used on campus or at certain restaurants around the school. Just make sure your child does not go overboard buying extra energy drinks and snacks at the campus convenience store. Otherwise, they may find themselves out of cash when they are hungry and ready to purchase lunch or dinner. It is always possible to replenish the money on a meal card, but you certainly don't want to have them go hungry while they wait for an electronic deposit to go through.
