Getting a higher education can be an amazing opportunity that paves the way for your future career. Not all of the education you get will be in a classroom setting however. Communal living does not have to be an awful experience that you must endure until you graduate. There are ways for you to find space and time to be alone. You may be living in cramped quarters, but having your own area and time to do what you wish is not out of the realm of possibility. It just takes some work. Some dorm rooms are much smaller than others. To prevent your place from becoming overcrowded and overwhelming you, bring as little stuff with you as possible. You will have more space and privacy if you do not pack the room full of mementos from home. Keep your belongings to a minimum. You are not at home with your parents anymore so don't try to bring everything in your room with you to the new living area. The bed might not be as comfortable as your bed at home and the desk might not be top quality, but find a way to make them work. In most community colleges with dorms, space is limited. As a student, you are likely to have a limited budget to work with as well. When it comes to furnishing your room, one option is for both people to purchase or bring along items that can be shared. One roommate may supply a lamp or two, while another may bring the dishes or the window shades for the place. It is helpful to agree on what possessions are to be shared and what is personal. It is good to help one another out, but you also need to establish boundaries for personal property to prevent arguments from occurring. One solution is to write your name on your own items so when the time comes for the two of you to part ways, there will be no confusion. It is important to decide upon the house rules from the beginning. During your time living together, you can expect other students to be dropping by for chats, meals, study sessions, and dates. To prevent an invasion of privacy, determine what rules will work best for the two of you when it comes to other people coming by, spending time in the room, and using the items found there.
