One fine morning you wake up, desire to become a hunter, so pick up your family-owned rifle and go out on a shooting expedition. And you think you will come back home victorious? If you think like this, then you seriously underestimate hunting and hunters! Hunting is a skill that needs to be learned and practiced. Haven’t you heard ‘Practice makes the man Perfect?’ before you even think of firing from a rifle, you must know how to hold it. Yes, there is a technique in which you lift and hold a rifle. Then there are shooting tips which you must know. There are various equipment too which you require while setting out on hunting expedition. to put what I am saying in a crux is that shooting is not about picking a gun and pulling the trigger. There is more to it than meets the eye. And I would specifically discuss about long range shooting because that’s what I am interested in.
Control That Trigger This is your first lesson. It is imperative that you control the trigger. Take help from a snap cap so that you do not break the firing pin. You cannot use a spent shell more than once or twice. The best way to control it is to hold the dime horizontally on the barrel tip of the gun and begin with your dry firing. Ensure that you do not shake or move or else the dime will fall. This is an excellent way to control your trigger. Maintain That Elevation Maintaining the right elevation is one technique that a long range shooter should be really good at. This will help you to have a proper idea about the distance. As I mentioned elevation is not really a problem with the short range shooters. It is more to do with the long range shooters. One should practise making adjustments on the range having targets at different distances. In this way you will be able to gather a better idea and enhance your judgment. Zero In If you are travelling a considerable distance while out on a hunt or shoot, it always helps if you check the zero of your firearms as soon as you reach the destination. The only reason for this is that even if it is a very good carrier, the gun can take a beating in it. Caliber Is Important By caliber I refer to that of the rifles. A bolt action and single shot rifle is available with a tighter lock up and chamber than the semi-automatics, pumps, and level action rifles. Caliber selection seals the deal in case of performance for a bolt or single action rifle and these are more preferred by the professional hunters. Choosing Your Gear Hunting depends on a lot of factors and one of them is your hunting gear. Do you have the best cope in the industry? What kind of binoculars are you carrying? What about the other items, like, flashlight, ropes, knife, food, water, hunting dress, etc? As far as optical devices are concerned, make sure you buy the best ones as these will help you bring your targets closer. For instance, the Leica binoculars, especially, the Leica Geovid binoculars are quite popular with the hunters. Similarly, your rifle scopes should be chosen well too. Besides, these there are several other factors which you should keep in mind as well, such as, the direction of the wind. It is important to gauge the weather conditions properly when you are in the jungle. The wind direction plays a major factor in long range shooting. At the end of the day it is your skill that makes you the winner. Hence, hone your skills well as you await the next hunting season.
