Losing weight is something that most people undergo at least once in their lifetime. For others it is an ongoing endeavor that is very frustrating. One of the leading difficulties with success is lack of weight loss motivation. We need a reason in order to obtain most any goal that we set out to achieve in life. But if you are struggling to attain those goals, take a look at what is, or is not, motivating you. Do you have support from your family and friends? Are you passing by fast food places on your way to and from work every day? Do you feel as though you do not have time to make healthier food choices? Did you join a gym with great intentions of going 5 times per week but have been twice? Are there loads of baked goods all over the place at work? If you answered yes to some or all of these questions, it can be extremely difficult to lose weight and maintain a healthy weight long term. You need to find something that motivates you to lose the weight. Perhaps a friend who wants to go to the gym with you. Take your dog for a walk twice a day. Or borrow a dog from a neighbor or a local shelter. Talk to a friend who is also struggling to lose weight and make it a friendly competition. Perhaps you are money motivated. Reward yourself with a set number of dollars for every five pounds that you lose. For obvious reasons, DO NOT use food as your weight loss motivation. Get your spouse on board with you. When you lose a certain amount of weight, maybe they have to treat you out to a movie. The kids can get involved also. Maybe have them do an age appropriate task for you for every 10 lbs you lose. You are getting the idea here. Whatever way you decide to keep yourself motivated is fine. We all have different likes and dislikes. Make your weight loss journey fun. It doesn’t have to be unpleasant or a “chore”. Another fun idea is to create different healthy recipes with your family and friends. Kids follow our example. When they see you having fun and making healthier food choices, they will want to join you. Which brings up another thought. Do you have a child or spouse who is also overweight? What better weight loss motivation is there than helping your family improve their health? After the entire family reaches their weight loss goals, go on a family vacation or outing. It doesn’t have to be extravagant. Set your weight loss goals. Make a reasonable plan of action. Include exercise. Find out what will motivate you. Start on your journey. Make sure you are setting all of this in writing. It will help keep you accountable. Maybe post a copy on the cupboards and fridge so you see it when you are reaching for that “just one bag of cookies”. With social media all around us today, you can even post your weight loss online if you like. You just may motivate others to improve their life also.
