EMR or the Electronic Medical Record is one of the most important items that is used in the health care industry. It is a digital record that contains all of a patient's medical history at a particular health facility and is used for making important healthcare decisions as it contains details of all the diagnoses, examinations, and treatments that the person has ever received. The Electronic Medical Record is a kind of electronic accounting document for the patient and is updated at every health facility visit including details of when they visited the facility, what illnesses were diagnosed at that time as well as the nature and type of treatment that was given to them and the outcome of such treatment. It maps out the entire medical history of the patient and summarizes it in a way that is easy to recall, analyze and update. It can only be updated by qualified health personnel using language that is understandable to other members of the profession and is both detailed and complete. The Electronic Medical Record allows the health care giver to track a patient's data over a period of time. It also helps to identify patients who require follow up visits, appointments, medication, procedures and care - both at home and within health facilities. This record thus monitors the overall health of the patient and is useful in improving the quality of care that is given at every health practice. This results in improvement in the quality of life of not just the patient but those living with him and all who are around him. Thus if someone suffers from say, epileptic fits, the health care provider immediately knows what medications he can give him or not give him and also what kind of advice to give those that are living with him or around him. This leads to better management of health conditions and the provision of a higher quality of care to all patients. The EMR, because of its nature of being complete and including all the relevant information about a patient, means that a patient can move from one practice to another with his or her record intact. This record can then be used to improve their health, regardless of where they are receiving health services and who the health care provider is. It gets updated at every visit to a health care provider and is therefore always current and up to date. It is especially important in emergency cases where decisions have to be made quickly in order to save lives. The Electronic Medical Record has thus become one of the single most important records that has been developed about an individual and goes a long way in ensuring that the person is always able to receive the type and kind of health care that they require throughout their life and wherever they may be. It has changed the way health care is provided in the United States and continues to be an important part of the healthcare industry in this country.
