Babies need healthy mouths even if they are just growing their first tooth. Eventually, the child will have to lose those teeth in favor of the permanent ones. For this reason, the child should also be trained how to care for teeth and gums so that cavities will not be experienced. Improper teeth growth will result to speech problems and oral problems later, where teeth are crooked. It is vital for parents to impose the correct oral hygiene practice so that baby will learn to follow daily routine for maintaining a clean and healthy mouth condition. It may be crucial for parents to begin checking the baby’s mouth right after birth since there are cases where teeth are existing at birth. If there are no teeth present yet, you may clean the baby’s gums and mouth gently with a gauze wrapped on the fingertip. Don’t forget to include wiping the tongue since bacteria is present in there. Teeth should be easy to detect when you stick a clean finger to feel the baby’s gums. Check for breaks or swelling on the baby’s gum line. Do this on a regular basis (weekly) since teeth can erupt quickly and it will be good if you can immediately detect teeth that have come through. Brush the teeth after they have grown. Once plenty of teeth have already erupted, including the molars, buy a soft toothbrush (not more than 3 rows of bristles). Introduce the toothbrush with no toothpaste yet in order to make the child familiar with the object and tolerate it. Use warm water for this. The baby will be able to practice gripping the toothbrush if you allow the child to do it. Gradually teach the proper toothbrushing motions and include the tongue during the brushing sessions. If baby is under 3 years old, a tooth cleanser can be used since they won’t know how to spit yet. As the child matures, introduce toothpaste in a gradual manner. Dr Terry Gomez, DDS can advise on which toothpaste is best to use, preferably the one with fluoride content.
