What To Do With Skunk Odor and Win It During Carpet Cleaning

Home Improvement,Health,Family & Parenting
Mild skunk smells can usually be removed by simply airing out your home, but stronger skunk smells that have worked their way into fur, clothes, or carpeting can linger for several months to several years if immediate action is not taken.

Skunk spray is an oily substance and will stick to anything that it comes in contact with. A good example is to think of it like touching gasoline. Once you get gasoline on your hands it is very hard to get the smell off and very easy to transfer it onto anything you touch because its oily residue sticks to any surface.Don't forget, skunk smell lasts a long time. It is not unusual for it to linger for several weeks. But the odor should be on a downward slide. However, the smell is from a dead animal it will actually get worse. Pets usually get sprayed by skunks either very late at night or very early in the morning. When this happens a they will seek shelter and help from their owners to get that horrible smell off of them. They will come inside the home through doggy doors or make enough commotion until someone lets them in the house. From that point, its game on… Pets will run all over your home and rub themselves against anything they can find.

Since skunk odor situations happen very late at night, you'll need a very reliable solution you can use in the middle of the night. The products used will be somewhere in your home or at the corner convenience store. A recipe for cutting through skunk odor is great for cutting through pet stains as well. It's a mixture of peroxide, baking soda, and dish detergent.

The ingredients of the skunk deodorizer are 1 quart of 3% Hydrogen Peroxide; ½ cup of baking soda and 1 tablespoon of liquid dish or laundry detergent. Mix these three items in an open container. Never, Never put them into a container and then close the lid. The escaping gases could build up enough presser to explode the container. Never store this mixture. If you create it, use it. This formula is only effective for deodorizing items that have been directly hit with the spray. It won't deodorize your room. Be careful it may discolor fabrics etc.Cleaning a home that's been skunked can be very messy, very labor intensive and very expensive. Do everything you can to isolate the problem.

Skunk odor on carpet, upholstery and rugs should be professionally cleaned because they require heavy duty degreasers and oxidizers to remove the oily, smelly residues. This is the hardest part of any skunk restoration job because pets will transfer the most odor onto these surfaces. Unfortunately, the solution mentioned above can't be used on carpet, rugs or upholstery. These products are not designed for textiles so professional carpet cleaningcarpet cleaning products and equipment will be needed for this part of the job. Be sure to ask the technician for a copy of his odor removal certification as not everyone is qualified restore textiles with skunk odor problems.
