Do you know that gum problems have caused more cases of tooth loss than dental cavities? According to Albuquerque dentist Dr Terry Gomez, DDS, most people do not know that it is not only the teeth that they should take care of but also the gums. All over the world, a huge percentage of adults are diagnosed with a certain kind of gum disease due to lack of good dental cleaning regimen and also through genetic predisposition. Here is how gum disease happens and develops: A layer yellow sticky paste forms on the surface of the teeth when you fail to brush the teeth for a certain period. This may appear to be particles of food that have been left on the teeth but they are actually the build up of bacteria. Although most of them are harmless, some of these bacteria in the yellowish layer will produce toxins that will accumulate on the teeth and gums day by day. The accumulated debris from bacterial excretion will form the plaque which stays on the grooves of the teeth (the part which touches the gums). Soon, the plaque will be fully solidified and totally composed of bacteria and is now called tartar. The tartar build up can eat the surrounding tissues at the gum line, causing infection on this area. As the body reacts to this, blood vessels will be generated, thus, making the gum look reddish and swollen. However, these new blood vessels will also be attacked by bacteria so the gums will bleed easily when coming in contact with hard food or the bristles of the toothbrush. This condition is called gingivitis, which is a milder form of gum disease. It would be necessary to have a checkup with an Albuquerque dental professional to confirm the possibility of gingivitis and how this can be treated. This oral issue can be treated by going back to the practice of regular brushing, flossing and using mouthwash. It would also require special toothpaste intended for gum care and not just for plain teeth cleaning. The progression of gingivitis will result to periodontitis where the bone that supports the teeth will decrease in mass and therefore, the teeth will be loosened from their base. With no treatment for gingivitis that has progressed into periodontitis, the person can lose all teeth since they are already too loose to be retained or they also experience severe tooth pain. Periodontitis is already untreatable once the disease has reached this gravity. Prevention of gum disease should start with a tooth cleaning regimen that will consist of toothbrushing at least twice daily, flossing and using mouthwash. Put more effort in cleaning the area between the tooth and gum using the 45 degree angle (45 degrees upwards and 45 degrees downwards).
