Dress To Impress: The Necessity For Eco-Friendly Clothing

Business
Green is the new orange. Environmentally conscious practices are becoming increasingly popular, as people understand more and more how their choices affect our natural resources and our future well-being. Some people have opted to recycle, some have chosen to bike more often to work, and others buy eco-friendly clothing.

If you haven't gone "green" for your fashions (figuratively, not literally), here are a few reasons why it's time to do so:

Reduce the Strain on Natural Resources

Eco-friendly clothing is often made of fibers that are derived from more sustainable resources (such as bamboo and hemp) or that are grown without the use of harmful chemicals (such as organic cotton). Environmentally friendly fashions are also made of recycled fibers, so as not to require the use of any new materials. Whatever choice you make, the result is the same: You are putting less strain on natural resources.

Support Fair Labor

Many companies that employ environmentally friendly practices also support fair labor. They are less likely to use child laborers and are less likely to make employees work for obscenely longer hours with much less compensation than they deserve. They are also more likely to create safe working conditions. By supporting companies that are committed to creating eco-conscious garments, you are indirectly supporting fair labor practices, and are choosing to have a hand in supporting companies that would rather support human rights than make money with cheap labor.

Promote Environmental Activism

Every dollar you spend with a company is a vote. You are telling the industry what is important to you, and doing so you are promoting change. When you insist on buying sustainable and eco-conscious clothing, you tell other companies that you value these practices. Other manufacturers will begin to see that these practices will be rewarded, and they will adopt the same green standards. The larger the company, the more influence they will have, creating a ripple effect. Consumers have more control of the market than they realize. You can affect great change just by where you choose to spend your money.

Better For You Skin

The clothing you wear rubs against your skin all day, every day (for the most part). Most commercially produced fabrics contain chemicals like pesticides and dyes, and these can irritate your skin and possibly cause long-term damage. Even if you don't have sensitive skin, these chemicals can cause rashes, chafing and other irritation. By purchasing more sustainably created garments, you can avoid those irritating chemicals and protect your skin. You'll also experience fewer problems with acne and dryness. Even if you don't think the fabrics you wear are causing these problems, you may be surprised to see them clear up when you make the change.

Being environmentally friendly is the fashionable thing to do and environmental statistics reveal that it is what consumers have to do if life is to continue thriving on earth. The choices you make can help create a better world for you and all the people you love. The clothing you wear has a big impact on the environment thanks to the way the materials are raised to get the fabrics, including what chemicals are used on them. Start choosing more "green" fabrics to do your part for the environment and to treat your skin better. You'll feel better, and you'll be contributing to positive social change.
