If you haven't seen The Goonies movie, you have missed a treat! Made in 1985, it's about a group of friends who try to save their neighborhood from being demolished and taken over by the local country club. It's the classic story of a big, rich guy against the little guy. There is a happy ending, but you definitely have your doubts with all the roadblocks the kids run into along the way. The movie takes place in the Goon Docks. Mikey is one of the main characters, and he has a brother, Brand. The other friends (a.k.a. Goonies) are all best known by their nicknames: Chunk (Lawrence), Mouth (Clark), Data (Richard), Andy (Andrea), and Stef (Stephanie). The friends come together when the local country club wants to take advantage of the homes in foreclosure, so they can expand the club. Of course, the families don't want to lose their homes. They don't see any way out, though, and seem resigned to the fact that they will all be moving. In that low time, Mikey and Brand go through some things in their attic, and they find an old map, newspaper clipping and reference to a treasure left by a pirate named One-Eyed Willie. Mikey immediately sees this as a way to save their homes - find the treasure and they will have enough money so the country club can't touch them! Mikey talks all his friends into this adventure. Each of them has a unique personality and different gifts they bring to the group. Mikey has asthma, but he is a true leader and doesn't let anything stop him. Chunk is hilarious because he always thinks situations are going to end badly... and sometimes they do! As the kids head toward the treasure, they stumble upon the Fratellis, a family that is running from the law and using a place near the pirate cave as their hideout. They find out what the kids are up to, and they want the treasure too! They capture Chunk, and put him in a cave where they are keeping a deformed member of their family, Sloth. Chunk looks past Sloth's deformities, and they become good friends. As the group of friends heads toward the treasure, they run across lots of booby traps left by One-Eyed Willie. The Fratellis are close behind them, hoping to nab the treasure when the friends find it. The kids do find the treasure on an old ship, and even the remains of the infamous pirate. As they leave, though, the Fratellis steal their treasure and start to make them walk the plank. Then, Chunk and Sloth come to the rescue, and the kids get away! The Fratellis try to gather more of the treasure but they set off one of Willie's final booby traps, and the cave starts to collapse. The kids make it out, but now they've lost the treasures that were going to save their neighborhood. You might think the country club now comes to its senses and decides not to go through with it. Or someone's rich relative shows up and saves the day. It's Mikey who saves the day - with the help of the Walsh's maid. She sees that Mikey's marble bag has some precious jewels taken from the ship - that amount to more than enough to save the Goon Docks! And best of all, Sloth is invited to live with Chunk's family! A wonderful feel-good movie that can be enjoyed by all ages, watch The Goonies for a spirit-lifting adventure! Interested in traveling to Astoria, Oregon? Goonies fans sure are!
