For the majority of homeowners the question isn't whether to purchase one or two vacuum cleaners. Instead, homeowners need to determine which types are best for their floors. With so many different models on the market, it can be confusing which one is best. There are some for carpets and some for hard flooring. Which is best for homes with pets? What if you want to utilize it to clean out crumbs from your cupboards or along the baseboards? Thankfully, there seems to be an appliance for every situation: Upright Models Upright vacuum cleaners used to be designed solely for carpet. Nowadays, many models can also dust and sweep various types of hard floors. An upright appliance can even be used to clear crumbs out of cupboards, refresh carpeted stairs, and clean out your car. As long as you have the right attachments, you'll be able to get into a whole lot of nooks and crannies. One issue that may come up is the ease of transportation. An upright is hard to carry up and down the stairs. Using the attachments on the stairs or in the car may be difficult if you have to carry the machine from one level to another. Canister Models Of all the larger vacuum cleaners, the canister model is one of the most popular. It's versatile and can easily be used on both carpet and hard flooring. Carpet is cleaned much more effectively if the appliance has a power bar attachment. With a wide range of prices, there's a canister unit that fits into any family's budget. Hand-Held Models These lightweight, cordless units are wonderful to keep around the house. They provide an easy portable option for cleaning the stairs, lint off of the couch, or small dry cereal spills on the kitchen floor. The small receptacle needs to be emptied frequently in order to keep the suction strong. If you need a larger unit to clean your boat or car, you may want to consider one of the heavier, portable electric hand-held vacuum cleaners. These options are larger, but still portable. They usually require an electrical outlet. Stick Models and Sweepers Like hand-held models, these lighter units provide an easily portable, cordless option. They're primarily meant for light-duty chores - items that could be removed using a broom. Generally, you'll probably own a heavy-duty canister or upright model as well as a sweeper or stick option. Tips for Shopping for the Right Option When you're researching vacuum cleaners, you'll need to consider what type of floors you'll be cleaning. Also, do you also want a smaller unit for light jobs? Perhaps you want a sweeper to clean up small messes in the kitchen. Before making a purchase, you need to verify that you can easily find bags and replacement parts for the unit that you choose. If you do this in advance, you won't have to deal with the frustration of searching for replacement items, and possibly having to purchase a new unit. Since a vacuum is necessary for keeping your home clean and free from dirt, dust, and pet dander, do your research and purchase the correct unit for your home.
