ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines, Nov. 28 (Xinhua) -- The number of death toll of a powerful bomb explosion that ripped through a budget hotel in Zamboanga city of south Philippines Sunday night rose to 3, but the number of injured was announced at 27, according to new reports from local police Monday. The bomb exploded about 9:30 p.m Sunday at the Atilano Pension House located in Mayor Jaldon Street, which was just about a kilometer away from the downtown area of Zamboanga, City Police Director Edwin de Ocampo said on Monday.
De Ocampo said two of the victims died on the spot while the third, Aguias, who was reported missing was pinned among the rubbles and trapped overnight before his remains was discovered by the searching team. The two died on the spot were identified as Roel Barcelona, whose last name remained unknown, and Fidel Aguias, 24, a native of Pagadian City, Zamboanga del Sur province, De Ocampo said. The police official said the bomb, believed to be improvised explosive device (IED) exploded in one of the rooms in the second level of the 2-storey budget hotel and demolished almost the entire level and its floor crashing down the first floor. The injured victims were rushed to three different hospitals and about a dozen have remained confined due to severe injuries. The explosion was powerful enough that also brought destructions to an adjacent motel building structure which brought down its ceilings and crashed down glass walls and window. De Ocampo said the explosion was following by a fire but was put out by the alerted fight fighters and prevented it from spreading. "The bomb appeared to be an incendiary type as fire proceeded following the explosion," De Ocampo told media.
