Industrial Tents and Portable Buildings Accommodate Additional Workers During Turnarounds |

Plant turnarounds are vital to an industrial facility's operation. During a turnaround, the plant stops its day-to-day operations in order to focus on maintenance, cleaning, inspection and repair. Turnarounds allow for internal inspection and routine maintenance of plant equipment, which is not possible while the facility is operational. Servicing equipment while the plant is shut down prevents problems that could result in costly outages later. Because the facility is shutdown during a scheduled maintenance period, it is not manufacturing its product; thus, it is not profitable. Therefore, it is essential that employees work round-the-clock to bring the site back online as quickly as possible. Plants often hire additional personnel in order to complete the turnaround on schedule. It is not uncommon for an industrial site to hire hundreds or even thousands of additional workers to meet the demand. It is important that turnaround managers have a plan to accommodate the additional workers, which may include renting industrial tents and portable buildings. Employees coming to the plant to work the turnaround will have the same needs as your regular employees. They will need a place to eat lunch, change clothes, or hold meetings. Unless employees eat lunch in shifts starting around eight o'clock, your existing facilities will not be sufficient. Temporary industrial tents can be brought to the job site to be used as a lunchroom. They often come with picnic tables, lighting, HVAC, and power distribution so that the workers are comfortable during their break. For scheduled maintenance taking place during the summer, it is important that workers stay hydrated and do not overheat. Temporary cool down tents provide shade and mist fans, which leave workers feeling much cooler. Finally, some contractors working during the maintenance period will need a place to do their jobs. Fabrication tents are made of flame resistant materials, allowing for operations such as welding. Portable buildings can also provide a place for contractors to hold safety meetings, offices for site supervisor to complete paperwork, or a place to store tools at the worksite. Making the worksite convenient for contract employees will go a long way in ensuring that the scheduled maintenance runs smoothly. Plants are obviously dangerous places. The safety of the employees working the turnaround must be the facility manager's primary concern. Accordingly, industrial tents must be sited so that they can be used safely, and the model selected should protect workers from known possible accidents. The American Petroleum Institute strongly recommends that the structures be placed in such a way that they protect employees from explosions, fires, toxic material release, and other events. Air shelters are a type of structure that meets these requirements. They are designed to be blast-resistant, and as such, can be safely located closer to the worksite. Having the workers closer to the site for lunch breaks, meetings, or to collect tools cuts down on transportation time to and from the job site, which reduces overall maintenance time. Turnarounds require plant managers to balance the need to work quickly to restore operations with the need to provide a safe work environment. Temporary industrial tents and portable buildings are a safe way to accommodate your additional workers.
