Learning a language can be really important. Most people will do some basic language skills as part of their education. In the UK this is often French or German, and in other countries English is frequently studied. There’s lots of reasons why English courses are often the preference, but perhaps you haven’t given it much consideration. If you’re looking at English courses as an adult, it can be useful to see why so many people choose to study them. 1) It’s not actually that difficult to pick up Now, take this with a small pinch of salt because learning any language is difficult and time consuming, and requires on going practise to maintain, but of the most commonly spoken languages in the world, English is one of the easier ones. Chinese Is notoriously tricky, especially for Europeans because it is based on a completely different alphabet, and none of the characters are even slightly familiar. With no experience you could have a go at reading French or German aloud if you spoke Spanish, but if you tried with Chinese then most of us wouldn’t have a clue where to start. English is rooted in the Germanic language family which means if you speak any of the other languages you’ll find you can pick it up with relative ease. With its global usage, English courses seem like an obvious choice. 2) It can help your career prospects Knowing a language is an automatic CV boost. It shows an ability to learn, and it also helps you to stand out from a sea of candidates who all have the same qualifications and experience. It means you can perform jobs you wouldn’t have necessarily considered in the past. If you want to live or work in an English speaking country it will put you in a massively good position if you’ve studied an English course and have the relevant qualifications. Even if you can speak the language, if you’ve not done any formal testing it can be difficult to pick this up from a CV. 3) It’s spoken worldwide You will find that quite often, for two groups of people from non-English speaking countries, it will be the common language. This is because it is commonly taught, and because there are a lot of native speakers as well. It’s the primary language of Australia, the USA, Canada, New Zealand, Ireland, and of course the rest of the UK.
