ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines, Sept. 25 (Xinhua) -- At least 11 rebels and two soldiers were killed while five others were wounded when armed men attacked a marine detachment in a village of the southern Philippine province of Sulu shortly before dawn Sunday, a security official said. The military source, who asked not to be named for lack of authorization to talk to the media, said a big group of rebels assaulted the detachment of the 30th Marine Company in the village of Kabungkol, Talipao Town about 4:40 a.m. local time. The marines who were under attack retaliated, sending a fierce firefight which left 11 rebels killed, the source said, adding two of the marines, including a lieutenant, were killed while five others were wounded in the ensuing gunbattle. "Firefight is still ongoing as of this report," said the source. The wounded marines were immediately extricated and airlifted by the Philippine Air Force HU1H helicopters and brought to the trauma hospital inside the Camp Teodolfo Bautista in village Busbus in Jolo, the capital town of Sulu. The marines recovered seven high powered firearms from the slain rebels. Pursuit operations have been launched. Sulu is a known stronghold of the Abu Sayyaf group. The Abu Sayyaf, active in southern Philippines, was founded in the 1990s and has perpetrated a number of high-profile attacks, including kidnapping, bombing and beheading.
