SANAA, Sept. 26 (Xinhua) -- The Yemeni defense ministry said Monday that opposition-backed rebels stormed a base of the Republican Guards northeast of the capital, killing its commander and capturing up to 16 soldiers. "Brigadier Abdullah al-Kilaybi, the commander of the 63rd Republican Guards, was killed in an attack targeted the military base by the militants of the opposition Islamist Islah Party in Nihm district," the ministry said in a brief statement. Officials of the ministry confirmed that about 16 soldiers were captured by the rebels and about five other soldiers were killed during the attack early Monday in the northeast of Sanaa. The officials denied that the militants have taken over the military base. Opposition sources said two rebels were killed and tens of others were wounded during the fight. Nihm, some 40 km north of Sanaa, has witnessed sporadic clashes between the Republican Guards and opposition tribal fighters supported by defected army troops since late May that left dozens of people dead and forced hundreds of families to flee the area.
