What springs to mind when you hear someone mention a window cleaner? Scruffy clothes, dirty rags, smelling of smoke or alcohol, tatty vehicle with old ladders slung on the roof? It's fair to say that window cleaners in general have a bad rep. Many people view them as unreliable and unprofessional. But is this the whole truth? In reality even a unprofessional window cleaner has been providing a valuable service! They have been doing a job that the property owner themselves, refuses or dares not do. In truth, traditional window cleaning has been a risky business for decades, one slip of the ladder could mean the end of your career and even your life. During the last 10 years a new safer way of cleaning windows has been developed, which has reduced the need for ladder use and therefore reduced the risk factor involved in the trade. You basically pump purified water up the length of a pole to a bush head, and agitate and flush all organic material off the window, leaving only pure water to evaporate away leaving the glass spotless. So has this new way of cleaning windows resulted in a more professional breed of window cleaners? Well really the answer is sort of. You see what really used to attract average Joe to window cleaning was the minimal overheads, all you really needed was a bucket, ladders, rags and some hand gear. Now with the advent of pure water systems, a significant investment is required to clean windows this way, therefore weeding out some of the lesser committed. So has the traditional window cleaner been cleaned off the face of the earth, by the new system of cleaning? Well the customers themselves have been having the say in this issue, and many are divided as to which they prefer. Many customers find it hard to adjust to the new method of cleaning, some even feeling that spraying water around and leaving drops on the window unprofessional in itself. The truth is that a truly professional window cleaner will use discernment as to when to use the new method and when to revert to the traditional, often balancing safety issues against disruption to the homeowners usual service. Now so far we have only been considering the cleaning of exterior windows, and this is in reality only a third of the task confronting a professional window cleaner. The real challenge for any window cleaner is when you have to go inside to clean the internal windows.
