COLOMBO, Sept. 1 (Xinhua) -- Australia took control of the first Test match against Sri Lanka at the end of play on day two on Thursday in the southern town of Galle. The Australians enjoy a 283 run lead after scoring 115 runs for the loss of six wickets in their second innings at stumps. Earlier Australia, who had scored 273 runs in the first innings after batting first, bowled out Sri Lanka for 105 runs just before tea on day. The Australians however lost two quick wickets in the second innings and were looking down the barrel before Philip Hughes and Captain Michael Clarke rescued the team. Clarke scored 60 runs while Hughes made 28 before both players lost their wickets to some tight Sri Lankan bowling in poor batting conditions. The Australians later saw wickets tumble again before rain stopped play and the match had to be called off for the day, earlier than the scheduled time. For Sri Lanka, spinner Rangana Herath, who took 3 wickets in the first innings, had taken another three in the second innings by the time stumps were drawn on Thursday.
