When Should You Not Use WordPress For Your Website?

Internet,Marketing
You may have come across numerous articles coaxing you to go in for a WordPress powered website or a WordPress blog. But what people don't tell you is that although WordPress is very versatile and can be tweaked to suit your needs, there are some places where it just should not be used. This article tries to point out the places where WordPress should be avoided for obvious reasons.

High Security - High Risk Websites

For obvious reasons, you would avoid using WordPress for a website related to the Banking or the Finance Sector, especially due to the fact that there are many known vulnerabilities for WordPress and there maybe many more vulnerabilities which remain undiscovered. Although all software may contain bugs or vulnerabilities inherently, WordPress remains more vulnerable due to its popularity. When you have a custom coded website, an attacker will need to understand the code and structure of your system before he attacks you, whereas in a WordPress website, there are ready vulnerability scanners and tools to detect exploits in your website. Having a custom coded website make it all the more difficult for newbie attackers or script kiddies to ruin your site. It's no surprise why only a few Government and Military Organizations use WordPress for their primary websites.

Small Businesses and Simple Brochure Websites

If you are planning to have just a simple static website to serve as a 24/7 online brochure, you might as well get a couple of pages designed with HTML and CSS rather than install an entire Content Management System like WordPress. This will use less web hosting resources and will also give your website a personal touch. The custom designed website will have less frills and may require looking into only once every 8 - 10 months. Having a small website with 5 - 6 pages will help you manage your files and online resources and also allow you to update the website yourself, with basic knowledge of HTML and CSS. The latest HTML 5 and CSS 3 standards allow you to incorporate modern effects and options in your website. Nowadays, designers charge as low as $30 per page for a customized website and can get it up an running in a couple of days.

Video and Audio Streaming Websites

As you may have noticed, most content streaming services don't use WordPress or a conventional Content Management System. The reason is that media streaming and audio streaming require a special framework which is lighter than the primary interface of the WordPress website. Media streaming requires the pre-loading of numerous other software which balance the load on the servers and also provide the user with an awesome experience. WordPress is just not cut out for such customization. WordPress was primarily meant for the text and image era. Even if you do end up customizing WordPress to make it media sharing easier, it will end up costing you the same as a custom media sharing platform or a media sharing CMS system.

Highly Competitive eCommerce Businesses

eCommerce businesses cannot afford even a few minutes of downtime or lag time. With every few minutes of a page not opening or a feature not working, they will lose out on money in real time. In such a situation, unplanned updates, emergency patches and new version upgrades may just not be possible. In an eCommerce business, there are too many stakeholders and entities at risk, when doing anything unplanned or unprepared. Although WordPress offers some pretty cool plugins for eCommerce, they just don't match up to the Big Boys. They don't even come close to functionality and flexibility. Having said that, there is no substitute for WordPress which is as effective as easy and as cost effective for a start up website or a site on a shoe string budget. When the back end is more important than the front end of the website, WordPress just isn't the right choice.

When using WordPress you are always at the mercy of many other entities or development teams who have contributed to giving your website it's shape. The plugin coders, the theme team, and even the WordPress team all play a major role in the day to day maintenance and safety and security of your website. They may roll out an update at any time, without any prior information and you would have to constantly keep their software updated to ensure that your website is safe and secure. Another cause for concern is whether the Theme and Plugins will all be compatible with each other. An old plugin may not be compatible with a new version or WordPress, but the newer version of the plugin may not have the features you wanted.

Overall, WordPress is value-for-money and one size fits (almost) all. But if you are looking at something unique and different from the run-of-the-mill WordPress websites, you might as well shell out some money and get your branding a fresh look.
