SANAA, Sept. 21 (Xinhua) -- Chief of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Abdullatif al-Zayani left Yemen on Wednesday after his three-day official visit to help appease escalating violence in the capital Sanaa, the state-run Saba news agency reported. During his visit, al-Zayani met with Yemeni Vice President Abd- Rabbu Mansour Hadi as fierce street battles rocked Sanaa for four straight days. "Hadi briefed al-Zayani that he issued a strict order to the rival forces to halt clashes ... and urged all sides to respond positively because Yemen has reached a crossroads (of crises) and that there is no way for getting out of these crises, but only through an honest, national dialogue in order to ensure the security, stability and integrity of the country," Saba said. Hadi also said the proposed dialogue based on the authorization by President Ali Abdullah Saleh is the sole solution to end the eight-month-long political standoff, according to Saba. The GCC leader said he came to "explore the latest development in the political situation of Yemen, in order to inspect the readiness of all parties to resume discussion about the details of the GCC power-transition deal." Although the rival military commanders agreed Tuesday on a cease-fire deal mediated by Hadi, head of the Yemeni intelligence body Brigadier Ghalibal-Kamish, and the U.N. envoy to Yemen Jamalbin Omar, clashes continued in the capital on Wednesday. At least five protesters and seven dissident soldiers were killed Wednesday afternoon and scores of others were injured in Sanaa in shoot-out between the government forces and thousands of protesters backed by the defected army, according to medics. The government forces blocked all entrances of Sanaa as a precautionary measure to prevent any infiltration of pro- opposition armed tribesmen, a security official told Xinhua on condition of anonymity. Although Hadi tried to find a way to resolve the long-stalled GCC power-transition deal, the protesters refused any mediation stipulating a grant of immunity from prosecution to Saleh and his family following what they said "series of massacres against them.
