What is positive parenting? It is a manner of raising your children that primarily focuses on their abilities and strengths. Don't take this to mean that disruptive behavior or problems are ignored, though. Every parent must address discipline problems as well as put certain limitations on how their children should behave. In this article, though, we'll focus more on those parenting skills that encourage positive behavior in children and reward such behavior. One of the first things you need to do to be a positive parent is to make sure that you're setting a good example for your kids. You can't really expect your children to behave a certain way if you aren't behaving the same way. So if you don't want your kids to yell, swear or eat junk food it's best for you to refrain from these activities yourself. Basics values such as respect, politeness, and honesty should be developed in children and this is where parents must set a good example. You can't expect your children to learn these values if they don't see you practicing these values. Today, most parenting experts believe that the authoritative style is the most effective parenting style. This is not the same as authoritarian, where parents expect to be obeyed without question. Authoritative parenting, however, is where you set rules and boundaries, but you keep an open line with your children so they can discuss those with you. There are parents who are under the mistaken belief that positive parenting means they have to be permissive parents, not laying out any boundaries or rules for their children to follow. Positive, authoritative parenting means you take an active role in your children's lives and you lay our appropriate rules and boundaries. In the same vein, you're flexible and are willing to openly discuss with your children certain rules. When it comes to positive parenting, one of its basic principles is spending time with the children. Making time for your children is something you have to do regardless of how busy you may be. You're more likely to form a strong, lasting bond with your children if you make time to talk, play, and do things with your children every day. Don't miss important events in your children's lives, such as sports events and school plays. It's often the case that children develop behavior problems when they're not secure and feel neglected. You need to spend quality time with your children so make time for them. You've just learned a few effective ways you can be a more positive parent to your children. Being a parent isn't always easy, and you can expect to have a certain number of challenges. However, if you are determined to put in the effort to effectively communicate with your child, making sure that you reward positive behavior, parenting becomes a little easier.
