The Nature Reseserve of the Lake Burano is situated in Italy along the cost of Maremma Tuscany in the municipality of Capalbio. The reserve is fitted with observation huts and with a beautiful nature trail with no man-made barriers. At the visitors center you find a projection room and a small nature track that includes a butterfly garden. The lake, in fact a salty coastal pond of about 300 hectares, is a relict of the wide Maremma marshes. The pond runs parallel to the coast an d communicates with the sea through a semi-artificial channel. The lake is separated from the sea by a narrow dune strip, well preserved and covered with a thick maquis and hosting a square-based tower, The shores are adorned with rush, sedges and most of all with reed thicket broken by several clearings. The protected area is used by a large number of water birds for overwintering and stopover during migrations. The single habitats are easy to access thanks to the presence of excellent structures such as nature trails and wildlife observation spots. Already next to the visitors centre, an observation hut allows watching the lake and easily spotting some of the most common species that frequent the area such as coots, grebes and cormorants, the latter usually standing on the posts with the wings spread to dry. Nevertheless, it is the nature trail that winds though marquis, coasting the lakeshore along the dune that reserves the biggest surprises. Walking through the entrance gate, you can watch all year round the grey herons and, during migration, the golden plovers. Further on, after a short walk in a eucalyptus path, there is a wood with big specimens of holm oak, cork oak, downy oak and sessile oak, a rare example of the ancient forests that covered the Maremma Tuscany pains. The first observation hut of the trail makes you aware of the incredible quantity of birds, that stop in the park in winter. In the reeds and on the edge of clearings, you can observe great white herons and egrets fishing frogs and fish. Along the track, it is possible to walk to the beach, another untouched and precious habitat of this reserve. From the beach, you can admire the southern coast of Maremma Tuscany in all its beauty .
