In the year 1841 James Braid created the name Hypnosis, prior to that it had been known as Mesmerism. Braid had decided to change the name because there was now a fuller understanding of what was happening when someone used hypnosis. His thoughts on hypnosis was altered as he was exposed to applications of it, although this was just before he passed, he never put this into print. Thankfully it's because of the stage performers interested in hypnosis, that it didn't die out during that time. Milton Erickson 1901 - 1980 began working with a sort of hypnosis which became known as indirect hypnosis, which has had an influence on many hypnotists today. This gentle kind of hypnosis was in stark contrast to previous types of hypnosis; it was used mostly for hypnotising people who didn't like the authoritative approach. Stage hypnotist Dave Elman, was a huge influence on hypnosis in that period, advocated a much more direct style than Doctor Milton Erickson. Dave Elman was known for his fast and solution based approaches?, often employed by many practitioners today. He specialised in educating those in the medical profession about the value of hypnosis for anaesthesia, many of his teachings are being taught to this day pain-free childbirth and traditional analysis. The late great Ormond McGill, was referred to as 'The Dean of Hypnosis', author of "The Encyclopaedia of Stage Hypnosis” and became known for his rapid therapy, in which he excelled. He influenced many therapeutic and hypnotic approaches that have influenced a great many hypnotists today. Ormond passed away in 2005. Gil Boyne 2014-2010, a pioneer of Transforming Therapy, which builds on previous findings made by Elman and Dr Erickson, and has been a massive influence on hypno-analysis therapy all around the world. A huge believer in the techniques used by Dr Milton Erickson and Dave Elman, Gil developed a therapy system used in many schools today. A lot of people have said that Gil was a great leader in the field of modern rapid hypnotheraputic techniques.
