Voice over Internet protocol involves receiving phone service using one's broadband Internet connection versus the typical method of using an analog line for service. The terms of service depend on the VOIP provider-each company offers individual service parameters with different price structures to customers. How it Works This application takes your voice and makes it into a digital signal that passes over an Internet connection. The service can also convert your voice to a regular signal if you are calling a regular phone line. To make a call, you can either use a standard computer, a special device provided by a VOIP provider, or a standard phone connected to an adapter. It's also possible to utilize this application wirelessly in a WiFi hotspot, such as a coffee shop or an airport. Equipment You Will Need Voice over Internet protocol requires specific equipment. You will need a high-speed connection via a cable modem or a router. You will also need to have a computer and either a special calling device or a regular phone with an adapter. The special equipment available through a VOIP provider looks and operates just like a typical phone, except it plugs into your modem or router. For the regular phone, the adapter would plug into the modem or router, and the regular phone would plug into the adapter. It's also likely that you will need to install software if you opt to make calls with your computer. In this case, you would also need a microphone to talk into your computer. Advantages and Disadvantages You may receive special perks from your VOIP provider. For example, you may have unlimited calling for both local and long-distance numbers. Calling can usually occur to other VOIP lines as well as to regular lines. Another advantage is the ability to combine services by rolling your phone into your Internet service for one price. Many customers experience a reduction in charges after making this conversion. Some disadvantages also exist with this application. For example, if you experience an electrical power outage, you will not have connectivity until it is restored. Directory assistance is often unavailable for customers with this application. Emergency and 911 assistance may also be unavailable for VOIP customers in some situations. Although the FCC requires companies to provide 911 emergency assistance for VOIP, connections and service may be different from calls originating from landlines. Other Details To use this type of line, your computer does not need to be on. You will be able to make calls while using your computer without issue. If you experience an interruption in your Internet, your connectivity will also be interrupted until the Internet is restored. With voice over Internet protocol, your devices will typically sound and work the same way they worked on a landline. You will make calls and answer calls in the same manner, and your device ring will not change. You may not even be able to tell a difference with the special equipment you use for VOIP.
